Why is it OK for people who get weight loss surgery to eat very little, but regular people shouldnt?

Why is it OK for very heavy people to eat like 400-1000 calories a day after gastric bypass surgery, but its not OK for people who want to lose weight but dont get surgery? I know about how your metabolism slows if you restrict calories, but thats only a problem if you give in and binge eat. If you stick with it and eat very few calories, your body has no choice but to lose weight.

Who says it’s ok, the surgeons that are making money off unnecessary surgeries??

Gastric bypass forces people to become bulimic, screws up their metabolism & causes them to become malnourished. If they don’t fix their eating habits (which should be done instead of surgery) they usually regain the weight in 6 years & their health is damaged further.

because people that are very overweight already have a lot of food in them and they dont need as much as we do

I think these bi pass surgeries are terrible. I would rather have my jaws wired shut. Then to put my body through that. I know three people who have had the surgery and each of them have gained most of the weight back, Even though they have a stomach the size of a small fist. But, the stomach stretches and it is dangerous that they can burst.

Eating can be an emotional outlet, as a source of comfort. My souce of comfort is ice cream, I know I shouldn’t eat it, but I don’t smoke, drink, do drugs, I live a very clean and healthy life. If a dish of ice cream is going to kill me. Well, I guess I must have a death wish.

Wow there are many mis-informed people out there. Your stomach does not "burst" if you over eat after gastric bypass, lol! Unless you stuff a steak down your face before your stiches have healed or something. If you over eat it will come back up. Gastric bypass does not force you to come bulemic either. That’s a the funniest thing I have heard yet. If you stuff your face and their is no room for the food , yes it will come up. But it is your CHOICE to eat too much. The bypass is a TOOL only, not a cure. Either you work with it to keep the weight off or you don’t, your choice. Their are malabsorption issues because your intestine is bypassed. These are issues are solved by taking vitamins, that simple. There have been a few rare cases where someone has not been able to absorb the vitamins. Gastric bypass has similar risks to that of a hip replacment, statistic wise. People are frightened by the unknown. The reason it is "ok" is because the patient is followed very closely by a team of Dr’s. You are taking a regimine of vitamins, measureing hydration carefully and constantly tested within the first year to ensure that you are healthy. 400 is a very low #. Between 800-1200 is the average. However during the first 2 monthes after while your stomach heals you may be around 400 cals a day. This is temporary. Just like if you had ulcer, or colon surgery. That being said, to say that gastric bypass is un-necessary and useless is rediculous. I have seen many peoples lives drastucally changed and saved. Obesity is not just a hand to mouht issue. MANY factors play a part. Educate yourself before making claims or decissions as to what is right or wrong.
